The Graduate School of Humanities invites applications for a full-time, tenured position as Associate Professor in Modern Japanese or East Asian History. The successful candidate will be teaching in English in the Japan-in-Asia Cultural Studies Program (JACS), one of the Nagoya University Global 30 International Programs.

 We seek a candidate who has shown excellence in research and teaching in Modern Japanese or East Asian History. The G30 Program is known for its small class sizes, motivated students, and international atmosphere. The standard teaching load is up to eight courses per year. A course is generally comprised of 15 weekly lectures, each of which runs 90 minutes. The successful candidate will be expected to supervise students, provide them with guidance and engage in the admissions process. She or he should also contribute to expanding the international research profile of the Graduate School of Huamanities.

Qualifications:

  1. A doctoral degree in Modern Japanese or East Asian History.
  2. A demonstrated record of research excellence in Modern Japanese or East Asian History.
  3. A proven record of teaching. The post is open to anyone specializing in any subfield of Modern Japanese or East Asian History. We particularly welcome applicants who can teach courses in Research Methods.
  4. A demonstrated ability to supervise students at the undergraduate and graduate levels.
  5. Willingness to participate in the International Programs of the university, including but not limited to teaching courses to Japanese students and some administrative duties.
  6. Strong interpersonal skills and evidence of success working in a multicultural environment.
  7. Sufficient Japanese proficiency for general administrative tasks is required.

Number of positions: One

Terms of Employment: No term limit until the age of 65

Starting date: October 1, 2021 or as soon as possible thereafter

Compensation: Approximately JPY5,000,000-10,000,000/year (all inclusive). Salary will depend on qualifications and experience. Taxes and insurance will be withheld from the annual salary. 

Selection Procedure:

  1. Initial screening based on submitted documents (see below).
  2. Successful candidates will be invited to a personal interview either on-site or remote. In addition to the interview, a short demonstration lecture will be requested.

  3. List of research achievements (including presentations, publications, grants, awards)
  4. List of courses taught (undergraduate and graduate)  
  5. Digital copy of PhD diploma
  6. Two letters of recommendation (to be submitted separately by the recommender)

Candidates who pass the initial screening will be asked to submit the following:

  1. Digital copies of up to 5 major publications
  2. Summary of research experience (1-2 pages)
  3. Proposal of future research plans (1-2 page)
  4. Statement of teaching philosophy, addressing the applicant’s ability to integrate creative thinking and global perspectives into their courses (1-2 pages)
